Though he looks like a young man, Jake's been around for centuries. He isn't
what you'd call a regular human.. more like a walking nuclear bomb. His energy
leaks can kill regular humans if he's not careful.
Sarah on the other hand was a regular girl... a tomboy actually. That was
until her entire community was captured and enslaved by the Ven'eelgs. She's
been around for barely two decades. How can they possibly be anything more than
just friends?
Interestingly, though I had intended the trilogy to be a sci-fi horror story,
with romance as a breather between horror scenes, the romance between Jake and
Sarah took over. To the point that my editor suggested that this be put in the
teen fantasy romance genre.
It is very funny though. I started off with the intention of the Jake and
Sarah relationship being platonic, as the two voices that narrate the story.
Jake being of the past, while Sarah of the present. Somehow, the characters came
to life and fell in love and steered this tale in the direction of Some Kind Of
Wonderful or Pretty In Pink type of romance. I let the characters drive the
story and this is what I got. Oh well. I can kiss my hopes of being the next
Stephen King goodbye.
I got Laura to do the covers that feature Jake and Sarah... and yes. that's
them at the top of every page on this site... Before she helped me, I tried to
draw Jake and Sarah on my own, in an attempt to do my own cover. This is what I
got.
The original drawings of the pair are in an old PC that crashed I don't have
backups. A close up revealed them very much in love. I drew them separately, and
when I put them together, they ended up in that pose. I couldn't undo it and it
was either accept them like that or lose hours of work. In the end, I accepted
them the way they seem adamant about appearing. As a couple deeply in love.
It seems like a case of opposites attracting. He being a warrior chief, well
bred of high stature. She's a farm girl with a love for apples. Yet somehow,
they seem made for each other. She's assigned to be Jake's sole trainee by their
leader, Torin, once he realizes Sarah's true potential..
