Chapter 10 - Sarah's First Patrol

Light a candle and put it out, over and over again. That was what Jake would have her do all morning.

"Boring. All that new power from Jake and I’m not allowed to do anything beyond a tiny flame," thought Sarah as she stretched her arms and yawned.

She took another bite of her half eaten apple and stared through the window. Jake's office. Wonder what he's doing.

Peering through their mind link, Sarah saw Jake totally engrossed as he flipped through some files.

"There's the great warrior chief - sorting out paperwork," she laughed.

Putting down the fruit, she switched to her warrior form, knowing very well the unsettling effect it had on Jake.

"Boo!" said Sarah mischievously, as she teleported herself right in front of Jake, draping her catwalk ready legs across his desk.

Her golden tendrils glistened as they stroked her heaving bosom. She blew him a kiss, filling his room with her intoxicating scent of tuberose and vanilla.

Jake stared at her, dumbfounded.

"I hate it when she does that," thought Jake, unnerved by the provocative effect her beauty had on him. He raised his hand to change her back.

Before he could do anything, she winked at him, her long lush eyelashes fluttering seductively, then she vanished.

Back in her room, she switched to her natural state.

Munching her apple, she continued lighting and putting out the candle.

Jake appeared beside her seconds later.

"I'm bored," she said, her breath reeked of apples.

"I know. But it is crucial that you learn to control your new power. You must master the restraint techniques I taught you."

"I can’t even keep my eyes open. What’s the use of all this power if I’m not allowed to use any of it," replied Sarah.

"I’ll show you why. We're leaving for our first patrol," said Jake folding his arms.

Sarah perked up. "Finally, we're out of here. I was getting claustrophobic."

"Switch to your warrior state and don't power down unless I tell you to."

She tossed the apple core into the bin and made the switch. There she stood before him in her warrior form, her eyes a fiery green, her skin glowing like the sun and her hands still sticky with apple juice.

Jake chuckled at her affinity for apples. "Clean up first. I'll introduce you to the peacekeepers in a while."

The cool breeze tickled her skin as she soared with Jake through the cloudless sky.

"I love this," she commented, flying as gracefully as a swan.

She noticed Jake's gaze fixated on her.

Her cheeks burned like fiery coals.

Their eyes met. Her heart raced like a train out of control.

He still has that effect on me. I can't shake it off. Got to get it into my head that he doesn't have any romantic interest in me. Family, remember?

Landing outside the peacekeeping center, Jake warned her, "You'll cause a commotion in there. Whatever happens, keep your blasts to yourself."

The wolf whistles that welcomed her were deafening. The peacekeepers were after all, red-blooded men.

Having Sarah, with her overly voluptuous figure, pencil-thin waist and super model legs, walk into a testosterone-filled place was like throwing a lighted match into an open cylinder of methane.

Jake began to have doubts about sending her on the patrols expected of warriors.

"New trainee?" asked Tom.

"Yes," said Jake.

"Healer?"

"No, elite warrior."

Everyone within earshot burst out laughing.

The idea of a bimbo like that as an elite warrior was just too much.

"Hey gorgeous, what're you doing tonight?" asked Dick, the resident playboy brushing up against her. "Nice tits!" He slipped his hand into her top and grabbed at her.

Outraged, Sarah lashed at him with a stun blast, rendering him unconscious.

"Sarah!" Jake reprimanded her verbally as he revived Dick with a blast of ice cold water.

"Keep your blasts to yourself or I'll muzzle you. You could have killed him!" he told her through their mind link.

For the rest of the hour, the men left Sarah alone. What she did to Dick was warning enough for the rest of them. Dick was still shaken up by her blast.

Tom briefed her on the procedures, bringing her through the orientation all new warriors go through.

As they left the center, Sarah was still furious about the incident.

"He deserved it", Sarah protested as they walked out of earshot.

"He doesn't deserve to die. You would have killed him if I hadn't dampened your blast." Jake replied.

"So you expect me to walk in there like this," she said gesturing at her warrior form, "and let them grab at me?"

Jake looked rather sheepish.

"No," he replied softly. "That's why I only dampened your blast. It caused him enough pain, but he won't die from it. I don't want you to be a murderer."

Mesmerized by her shining eyes, glowing skin, he found her irresistible. She was a picture of health and beauty.

He desperately wanted to hold her in his arms and to possess her. She looked so enchanting. So desirable... A magical quality about her. He knew that she was the one for him.

He moved closer to her and could sense that she accepted him. There was great intimacy between them. Their eyes locked.

He plucked up his courage and stole a kiss, a light kiss on her cheek. Finding no resistance so he kissed her mouth. Warm tingling sensation flooded his mind and passion erupted.

It was an intense moment that he would never forget. The adrenaline rush as they held each other in tight embrace. A tingling sensation went through his spine.

She melted in his arms. Her heart went crazy. Her cheeks were on fire.
This can't be happening... Please tell me it is for real... She did not want him to let her go.

Reluctantly, they parted lips, breathless and light-headed.

"We have work to do first," he said as he held her hand and took off in the sky with her.

"This diamond is internally flawless. Three point two carats," said the woman as she held the gem in the light.

"I'll take it, and everything in here. And the contents of that register as well," whispered a man in a tailored suit as he pointed a gun at her. His three male companions formed a human wall behind him.

She screamed.

The gun went off - one shot after another.

Blood splattered like a fountain over the counter, the walls and the ground beneath them.

"Idiot. You blew it," said one of his companions. He grabbed a silver haired man and pointed a gun to his head.

"Hands up everyone, where I can see them, or you'll join her," he said as he nodded at the dead woman.

Two men waved their guns at the crowd comprising of staff and customers while the man in the suit filled his bag with as much jewelry as he could find.

"Move it. Cops will be here any moment," said their leader, as he ushered his men to the door.

The door swung shut, right behind Jake. A green fire danced in his eyes. The gun at the silver haired man flew out of the robber's hand and vanished.

Gun shots rang continuously as they shot Jake.

"Dang bullet proof vest. Shoot his head!"

"What do you think I'm doing?"

"He's not human," said the guy in the suit as he dashed to the side exit, crashing into Sarah.

"Bitch!" He punched her.

What seemed like the cracking of soup bones was in fact the sound of his phalanx bones shattering. It was as if he had punched a brick wall.

Sarah's hands glowed with golden flames.

"Force fields only. No stun bolts," warned Jake.

The golden light turned blue as it burst from Sarah's hands, enclosing each robber in a blue bubble.

"What do I do with them?" asked Sarah.

"Pluck the evidence from their minds," he said as his eyes glowed as he scanned the minds of all those present in the store, robbers and witnesses alike.

"You missed these two," said Jake as two men floated out from the crowd and hovered above Sarah.

"I stored the mind scans in this disk for the peacekeepers to use as evidence," said Jake showing Sarah a disk the size of her palm.

"Now, send them to the cells, but put the guns in the evidence box," he said.

Her eyes glowed. The robbers and the guns vanished.

Sarah held the wrist of the dead woman. Her heart fell like a rock in a bottomless pit. "We're too late. There's no pulse," she said.

"She died before we arrived. Nothing we can do about that. The regular peacekeepers will take over from here," said Jake as he gently held Sarah's hand. "Come, we still have more ground cover."

"It's terrible. What happened to that woman," said Sarah as they flew over the forest.

"I know. These things happen. Sometimes, we make it in time to save their lives. Other times we don't. With all our power, there is only so much we can do," said Jake.

"What are they?" asked Sarah, pointing to five hooded men surrounding a group of villagers.

"They're beings of darkness held together by the robes they wear."

Jake and Sarah turned invisible as they observed the creatures.

The creatures chained the villagers to one another. Those chains resembled the ones used in the dragon's lair.

"The Master could use more test subjects," said one hooded creature.

Sarah remembered too well what the Ven'eelgs did to their test subjects. Fire burned through her veins with the rage of an erupting volcano.

She hovered above the creatures, visible for all to see. Her eyes blazed with an emerald fire while golden flames danced on her skin. Her hands were like twin suns that struck down the hooded creatures with a barrage of fire, vaporizing them instantly.

The hostages trembled as she approached them.

"Hey, don’t be scared," she said. "I’m just like you. I was their hostage myself."

They cowered before her with faces like corpses.

"You were ferocious," laughed Jake, switching to his visible natural state as he landed beside her.

Gently, Jake broke the victims' chains and freed them. The hostages thanked them, though their hands were still shaking from watching Sarah in action.

"Wait a minute. I thought you destroyed the dragon's lair and the master with it," said Sarah.

"That I did. They were talking about another lair with another dragon lord. There are many such nests hidden in this world that we have yet to uncover," Jake replied.

"What would have happened to me if I hadn’t escaped my hooded captor?" asked Sarah.

"I was trailing you, so if you hadn't escape, I’d have freed you eventually. But I wouldn't have recruited you into my ranks." He replied with a grin. "Torin said you've got what it takes, but I had to see that for myself."

"You could have fished me out but you hovered around to watch?!" exclaimed Sarah, her hands on her hips, her voice rising to a hysterical pitch. "How could you be so..."

Jake swept her off her feet, his mouth against hers in a long intoxicating kiss - silencing her.

"Stop! Thief!" yelled a man, chasing after a little street urchin. The scrawny girl dashed past them with a loaf of bread.

Lips parting, Sarah was left in a drunken stupor.

"Make yourself invisible. We have work to do," said Jake gently.

"Momma, I've got bread," said the little girl as she raced into a run down hut.

A woman in her thirties lay on a mat. Her arms and legs were like toothpicks. "My leg," she moaned, in a voice as weak as dying sparrow.

"We have to see to her mother," Jake told Sarah.

"You mean our power can heal people too?" She asked him.

"No, " he laughed, "I’m trained in First Aid."

Sarah smiled. Jake, fierce warrior chief and sweet boy scout rolled in one!

"Switch to your natural state. We don't want to frighten them," said Jake. He closed his eyes momentarily as he scanned the little girl's mind.

The door opened. "Yes?" said the little girl.

"Belle, we're here to see your momma, Anne. She's hurt and needs our help," said Jake.

Belle scrutinized the two strangers. They seemed friendly enough. Momma needed help, and she didn't know who else to turn to.

"This way mister," she said as she opened the door.

Jake examined Anne’s leg. "Her leg is badly infected and must be treated immediately. Do you have a pot I can use to boil some water?" asked Jake.

Behaving like an ordinary man, he filled the pot with water and heated it over a stove.

"I'll need a special plant to treat your momma's wound. Wait here for us," Jake said as he left the hut with Sarah.

Out of sight, he waved his hand over the ground. Two plants sprung out.

Sarah's rubbed her eyes and stared again. I must be dreaming.

"You're awake. Some of our powers are not combat related," he chuckled.

He plucked the long pliant leaves of one plant and the flowers of another. "These will do for the antiseptic and the bandage," he said.

Back in the hut, he dumped the herb into the pot. Carefully, he washed Anne’s wound with the antiseptic solution he had just made.

Gently, he bandaged her leg with the pliant leaves.

"Thanks," said Anne as she smiled at him.

She was still feverish. "Make a cold compress with this," Jake said, handing her a small towel. "The water in the stream behind the kitchen should be cold enough."

In the kitchen, away from Belle, Sarah took a basin. Her hand glowed as she blasted cold water into the basin.

Why bother. They can't see me here anyway.

Returning to Jake's side, Sarah applied a cold compress on Anne's forehead to ease her fever.

"You cheated," said Jake through the mind link.

"They wouldn't know."

"Belle was going into the kitchen; I stopped her or she'd have caught you red-handed and freaked out."

"You've helped me and I don't even know your name," said Anne.

"I'm Jake. She's Sarah. You need medical attention."

"That'll cost money..."

"I'll send over a medic who'll treat you for free."

"Why?"

"My people are here to help."

With that, Jake contacted Helen through their common telepathic link, with orders that Anne be placed in the care of the medical arm of the Academy.

As Jake and Sarah left the hut, Sarah looked around the barren land.

"Poor kid. She's got to steal bread to live. At least Helen can heal her momma. Helen's got some healing powers, doesn't she?"

"No, she doesn't. She's an elite warrior like us. Helen's a healer because of her background in medical research long before she became a warrior. Her medics were doctors and her healers are scientists. With the exception of Helen, their powers are far weaker than ours. Just enough for our daily communications and transport. Like everyone in our world, they are indestructible. Helen is an elite like us. It's a long story," he said.

"You'll have plenty of time to tell that to me. Is there any way we can help them with food?"

"The medic will bring some supplies for Anne and Belle. Until then, you can grow some food for them. I'll show you how."

Sarah felt Jake enter her mind as he took her hand and waved it.

Abruptly, she found herself sitting on the branch of an apple tree. Plucking an apple, she sank her teeth into its crunchiness. A wide, contented smile spread across her face.

Jake hovered beside her, straight-faced, though his laughing eyes gave him away.

"Let me try that," she said as she jumped down from the tree.

She waved her free hand causing stalks of ripened sweet corn, bushes laden with sweet berries and trees full of a variety of fruit.

"You've got a sweet tooth," laughed Jake. "Get them something substantial."

He waved his hand and the tops of root vegetables as well as greens sprang up. "That should be more than enough to feed them from now on, as long as Belle takes care for their new farm."

"Hey, Belle, take a look at this," smiled Sarah.

"Wow! Where did all this come from?" asked the little girl. Her eyes sparkled like the lights of a chandelier.

As Belle ran through the bushes gathering berries, Jake and Sarah slipped into the woods and switched to their warrior forms. The lovers flew back to The Academy - hand in hand.
