Sfxfantasy - A Warrior's Death - Book 1 - Chapter 11
Chapter 11 - The Youth Sssstay away from me... from us... you and me the ssame aren't we? Please
hurry... sssssweetie... those fangsss... can't breathe... carry me...NOOOO!!!!
The young man's eyes stared blankly, as if in a trance. His pupils were
miniscule, his ribs - broken. Fresh scratches scarred his face and dried blood
stained his nails - his own blood.
Concerned, Helen probed his mind.
"It's here. I can feel it," said Evan as they approached the woods.
The woods reeked with the cloying smell of snakes, mingled with the pungent
stench of ammonia. Black flames danced in the dark clouds that hovered above the
trees.
"We’ve found a serpent nest," said Evan.
"I hate snakes. Must we walk?" said Caelan as he waded through the
living carpet of snakes, accidentally treading on one of them.
An angry hiss. A bite at his heel.
Fangs snapped as if they were brittle branches.
A broken snake slithered away.
Caelan spat in disgust.
Serpents draped themselves on every branch. Their eerie eyes were fixated on
these unwelcome strangers as if studying their every move.
Evan's eyes glowed. "Dark energy... switch to invisible mode."
Both warriors flew through the woods, following the trail of dark energy.
The acrid stench vanished when they reached a lagoon in the heart of the
woods.
The cloudless sky above the lagoon was like a immense blue sapphire. Delicate
flowers surrounding the lagoon gave out a sweet, hypnotic scent that lingered
around them.
"Just look at those gals swimmin' in that lagoon," whispered Caelan
to Evan. "You don't see such beauties anywhere."
"Something's not right here. Rein in your emotions. Stay away from those
women. The dark energy source is here, somewhere," said Evan.
Evan's words slid off his ears like water off a duck's back. Caelan was
mesmerized by the women. Their songs were like those of the sirens that drew
sailors to certain death.
One of them looked as if she had stepped right out of his dreams.
"Ain't she gorgeous?" Caelan remarked. As he watched her preen
herself in the water, his heart pounded like it would explode.
Copper ringlets framed her face, draping over her lily-white bosom. Her lithe
body was barely covered by sea shells.
"Caelan, come to me..." she sang hypnotically.
Without realizing it, he strode up to her, visible for all to see. Her eyes
glistened like sapphires as they caught his gaze.
"I’m Caelan, a warrior," he said.
"Ley'dya here."
The ends of her large red lips curled upwards, opening slightly to reveal
large fangs. Scales covered her body as her legs fused into a giant tail, that
wrapped itself around him.
In shock, he tried to flee but his body would not respond. Her sapphire eyes
narrowed into yellow slits as they pierced into his eyes. Their minds became
one.
"Caelan?" said Evan as he walked towards a cave. Through his mind
link, he saw his partner in the coils of a giant serpent.
The lagoon had become a swamp and the women, serpents.
Instantly, he teleported Caelan out of her clutches and into the emergency
room of The Academy's medical center. Young Caelan, once a promising stealth
warrior, lay in his bed, teetering on the edge of insanity.
