Harsh white lights illuminated the room. A silver-haired gentleman with an
unlined face of a youth struggled in a straitjacket. "I’m sane!"
"Yes, you are," cooed his minder.
His clear eyes darted around. In a burst of strength, the brawny man sprang
for the door. An intense pain shot through his leg as a guard kicked his shin.
As he fell to the ground, he felt a cold needle pierce through his skin. The
all too familiar biting pain shot through his arm triggering a wave of
drowsiness that overwhelmed him.
The walls around him were soft. Padded with thick canvas. He was all alone,
bound securely in a prison within the cell.
His shin stung as he forced himself up and hobbled to the door. Throwing his
entire weight at the door, he tried to ram it down. No use. Beads of sweat dripped down his temples as he leaned against the
wall, sliding down to a sitting position. Taking a deep breath, he spoke to
himself. "The name's Bob. I'm an elite warrior. I'm gonna break free from
this jacket and melt this cell to the ground with my power."
He closed his eyes and stilled himself. Reaching with his mind, he tried to
scan the building. He could not sense anything. It was as if his powers had
never existed.
Just hours ago, he was a police officer named Chad... until that crazy chain
of events...
Chad's nose twitched at the smell of burning rubber as he ran down the
street. A drug bust gone wrong. The culprit got wind of their plans and dumped
the evidence.
Aiming at a tire, he fired a shot.
The car spun out of control. The suspect leaped out of the door and ducked
into the alley.
His heart pounded madly as he pursued his quarry into the alley.
A gunshot went off.. Missed me.
A sharp blow sent suspect's gun flying. Grabbing his quarry's arm, he
handcuffed the man and led him away.
Through the rest room mirror, a bullet hole stared back at him, right from
the seam between the right sleeve and bodice. He pulled off his shirt, and
examined himself. His skin was totally unharmed.
"Nah. It’ss just that bullet proof vesst you are wearing," said
Al, his partner.
He brushed the incident aside. Al was probably right. Then another strange
thing happened.
The rhythm of stiletto heels hitting the pavement broke the silence in the
alley. An impeccably coiffed lady sashayed past a scruffy young man.
In an instant, the youth was off with her leather handbag.
"Stop! Thief!" The lady hobbled after the man as fast as her feet
could carry her.
Chad saw the entire incident. Dashing after the youth, Chad, leaped over the
fence and found, to his utter shock, that he was flying. His heart beat with
excitement as he landed before the young man and apprehended him. The youth was
too stunned to resist.
"Flying? You have a wild imagination," said Al.
"Watch this," said Chad as he leaped forward trying to fly.
He landed flat on his face.
Al burst out laughing. "That’ss a good one."
"I'm serious!" said Chad.
Al arched an eyebrow ever so slightly. "I think you need ssome resst."
Back in his quarters, Chad sat on the couch, pondering over that day’s
strange events.
The pizza arrived. It was cold. In a daze, Chad held his hand over his meal.
To his astonishment, a burst of light flew from his hand striking the pizza.
Steam wafted up from the pizza. It was as if the pizza had just come out of the
oven. That’s it! I'm onto something. His heart danced with exhilaration.
Breathing deeply, he held up his hands, focusing his thoughts on them. A
sudden surge of heat flew from within him, setting his hands ablaze, yet he felt
no pain. Just a satisfying warmth.
Out of curiosity, he touched the wooden table in front of him. It burst in
flames. His thoughts turned to a jar of water several feet away. As if
responding to his thoughts, the jar flew towards the table and poured its
contents over the fire, putting it out.
Floored by his new discovery, Chad fell back into his seat, careful to avoid
touching anything with his hands.
His heart pounded with excitement as he stood up again. He concentrated on
this strange energy he had found within himself.
This time, a strange warmth flooded his entire being. The heat within him
built up at an exponential rate. Flood gates opened as a strange energy surged
through his entire body, sending him ablaze with a golden flame. His memories
flooded back.
He was Bob, an elite warrior. This was not his world. This entire Chad thing
was a farce to keep him from the truth.
He saw his life before Chad.
Bob tore open a portal with his glowing hand. "Realm hopping. Everyone
get in!" He led his trainees through the portal into a secluded realm.
Abruptly, three-dimensional shadows surrounded them. Bob bristled.
"Abort this assignment! Everyone out!" Green light flew from his hands
as he teleported all his trainees out through the portal back to their own home.
A searing pain burst through his entire being. Dark energy crackled around
his entire body. Darkness prevailed.
Sunlight streamed over his face. Bob stirred. His head pounded as if someone
had hit him with a mallet. His mind was foggy.
"Hi, I'm Al, your partner. Doc ssayss you'll be okay. Sseemss you've got
amnessia," said a man tall like a bean pole.
"Partner? For what?" asked Bob, confused.
Al's eyes narrowed. "You're Chad, a police officer. We work together.
Remember? You got beaten up by Theo'ss goonss. I shot him down and got you to
the hosspital. They ssaved your life, but your memory'ss been affected."
Bob rubbed his head. "So, what now?"
"Life will go on asss per normal for you. I'll help you adjusst."
Al smiled, displaying a row of gleaming white teeth that looked a tad too sharp.
A key clicked in the door and broke his trance. He realized he was hovering
in the middle of his room, when Al walked in.
"You need help." Al's eyes narrowed into slits as he slipped his
hand into his pocket.
Instantly, Bob's fire vanished as landed on his feet.
Two burly men leaped on Bob and pinned him to the ground.
With all his strength, he threw off both goons and sprinted out of the room.
A gunshot went off.
A sharp pain pierced through his leg. Bob collapsed, clutching his shin,
hands covered in his own blood.
Al stood before him with a smoking gun. "Ssorry... I had to do that. I
could not let you get away."
The goons were on him again. This time, two of them held him down while a
third tried to force a straitjacket over him.
Fueled by his rage, Bob struck the goon hard with his knee.
His companion grabbed his legs and restrained him as they secured the
straitjacket.
Bob could barely breathe. The jacket cut into him as they tightened it.
The men lifted him up and dropped him repeatedly, tightening the jacket
further.
Blood streamed from his cuts. His lungs constricted further with each fall.
"You bastard!" he gasped as he glared at Alf.
A man in a white coat stuck a needle into his arm. "Get some
sleep."
The drug stung as it shot into his bloodstream. Drowsiness overcame him.
The air around her was heavy with smoke and dust. Helen closed her eyes and
scanned the world with her mind. He's in this realm all right.
Bob's trail led her to a sprawling estate. As she flew over a park, her
powers vanished.
Falling from the sky, she caught a branch for support. Whirling around, she
broke her fall with a graceful somersault, using tree branches like the training
bars in a gym. This place is under the influence of a power suppression device. How can I
get through security without my powers or any of my inventions?
Footsteps ahead. Two voices talking. The sounds were getting louder as they
approached her. She hid behind a tree.
"Weird guy in Ward 59. He kept screaming about some kind of powers. Said
he’d melt down the entire facility with his energy."
"Definitely a schizophrenic. Next thing you know, he'd try to convince
you that he can fly and talk to aliens or things like that."
"That he did- drove Tricia up the wall trying to convince her that he
could fly."
"He's a strong one though...gave Pat and Tom some problems earlier
today. They had to lock him in a straitjacket and toss him into a padded cell.
You know, the ones in the basement?"
"Maximum security for that nutcase? He doesn't look that dangerous to
me. At most, he might make you think you are from another world."
Peals of laughter followed.
Helen's heart pounded as if it had gone crazy. Maximum security in the
basement.
The men parted. One of them slipped into a quiet alley.
Helen dashed after him.
Hearing her, the man turned around. "Who's there?"
Helen leaped at him, answering him with a kick in his jaw.
Bending over the unconscious man, Helen relieved him of his lab coat,
employee pass and glasses. "I'll take these, thank you." She smiled to
herself.
Seated with his back against the wall, Bob stared out of the barred window.
Shift changes, movement of guards... everything followed an exact schedule. He'd
been there so long his leg had healed.
The familiar scent of roses, fresh linen and germicide greeted him. His heart
leaped with hope. Helen.
Bob waited by the door as she picked the lock. The door flew open. Helen
whipped off her glasses and dashed them against the concrete ground outside the
cell. Using a glass shard, she sawed through his bonds. As the last strap broke,
the guards returned with Al in tow.
"There she iss!" hissed Al.
A burly guard blocked their exit.
Helen's foot flew into the guard's jaw.
The hulking figure reeled as he fell backward.
"Go!" she said.
Grabbing her hand, Bob led her out of the maze.
Lungs burning, the pair ran straight to the road. Helen's stomach churned as
she heard growing sirens of police cars.
"In here," said Bob as he ducked into a narrow alley. "They're
gonna have to follow us on foot."
Navigating their way through a random series of alleys, they lost their
pursuers.
"We've gotta get away from the influence of the power suppression
device," said Bob as he led Helen towards the park.
Her cheeks felt unusually warm. She realized he was still holding her hand.
"You remember everything?"
Bob's eyes twinkled as he glanced at her. "Yeah. That's why they locked
me up and suppressed my powers."
A group of Ven'eelgs lurked outside the alley. "There they are!"
snarled one in Al’s voice.
"Should've known. That snake!" muttered Bob. "Run!"
He sprinted into the park, pulling Helen along with him.
Dashing past a lake, both warriors burst into flames.
Hands glowing brilliantly, eyes burning with a green fire, Bob turned on the
Ven'eelgs and vaporized them with a blast of raw energy.
