The cover of the trilogy A
Warrior's Death depicts Jake and Sarah in a scorpion's nest. This scene is
from book 2, Lost In Another Realm.
Her skin crawled as she stepped gingerly over a human
skull. Tiny scorpions ran all over the dry bones that lined the ruins. Scorpions
streamed out through the empty eyes of these skulls.
Jake bent over a half eaten corpse and gestured at Sarah
to take a look. On careful scrutiny, she could make out the features of the dead
man. "Dyami."
The dead man’s mouth was open. Scorpions crawled out
through it. Yet more scorpions pierced their way out of his skin.
Sarah felt the blood drain from her face. Her knees
wobbled like jelly. She leaned against a dead tree to steady herself.
A scorpion crawled from the tree and onto her back.
She jumped away, trembling slightly.
"You’ll be all right," said Jake in his low,
soothing voice. She felt his sinewy arm around her back. His warmth engulfed
her.
"The scorpion army's here. The third device might
be with them. Get ready," said Jake as he lit his sword. Wielding their
fiery swords, they surveyed the valley.
Jake was silent. As though listening for something. The
grating sound of claws against sandpaper though barely audible, caught his
attention. Spinning around, he brandished his sword at the portal that burst
open behind him.
Tiny scorpions streamed out of the hole, like ants at a
picnic.
The hair Jake's arms bristled as the scorpions shot up
to the height of full grown men. The deadly beasts surrounded the warriors,
lashing their deadly stings at the hapless pair.
Back to back in a well rehearsed dance, the warriors
sliced their way through the foes.
"That cave, the glow. Could be it," said Jake.
Sarah understood. Together, they inched their way
towards the cave, hoping that glow was from the cursed machine.
Razor sharp claws lunged at Jake's rippled abdomen.
Adrenaline surging through his veins, he dodged the blow
with the fluidity of a contortionist. His blade slashed down the scorpion's
head, slicing the creature in two, lengthwise.
As the two halves fell to the ground, each half
regenerated itself into a new, living giant scorpion.
